Why in News?
Recently, the Defence Minister described Project Kusha as a “game changer” for India’s security architecture while inaugurating the Advanced Weapon System Complex at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)‘s Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex in Hyderabad.
The project is expected to significantly strengthen India’s indigenous air and missile defence capabilities.
About Project Kusha
Project Kusha, also known as the Extended Range Air Defence System (ERADS), is an indigenous long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system being developed by DRDO.
It aims to establish a robust, multi-layered air defence shield capable of intercepting a wide range of aerial threats.
Objective
The project seeks to:
- Protect critical military and civilian assets.
- Strengthen India’s air defence network.
- Reduce dependence on imported systems.
- Enhance strategic autonomy in defence technology.
Key Features
Three-Tier Interceptor System
Project Kusha is expected to deploy three interceptor missile variants:
| Interceptor | Approximate Range |
|---|---|
| M1 | 150 km |
| M2 | 250 km |
| M3 | 350–400 km |
Significance
The multi-tier architecture enables interception of threats at varying distances and altitudes, creating a layered defence shield.
